Road Trip with a 4×4 Jeep
Prepare for a road trip through the heart of Norway! With Nordic Nomads, you’ll venture off the beaten path and discover the authentic, raw beauty of Scandinavia. Driving a 4×4 Jeep equipped with a rooftop tent, you’ll spend seven days traversing the most stunning roads in Scandinavia. Nordic Nomads has meticulously planned a breathtaking route for you, documented in a detailed roadbook for your journey. This journey will lead you alongside majestic fjords, across the Atlantic Road, and up the iconic Trollstigen. While you’ll visit some tourist highlights, you’ll also take detours where others continue straight ahead. This way, you’ll explore the most pristine spots and spend your nights in some of Norway’s most beautiful locations.
Vehicles and Accommodations
Your journey will be conducted in a 4×4 Jeep, an extremely maneuverable vehicle suitable for every driver. Mounted on the roof of this vehicle is a tent where you’ll sleep each night at the most scenic spots in Norway. In the rooftop tent, you’ll find a double mattress or airbed with sheets and blankets, along with two pillows, so you won’t need to bring your bedding along!
Nordic Nomads has carefully selected the most picturesque overnight spots in Norway for this road trip. Each of these locations comes equipped with sanitary facilities, electricity, and water connections. If you prefer a more adventurous experience, you can go truly “into the wild” as there are also overnight spots nestled in the heart of nature where you’ll wake up each morning to breathtaking views in the middle of nowhere.
Food and Beverages
Each Jeep comes equipped with cooking equipment for your culinary needs. You can purchase your own food from local supermarkets or opt for an “adventure food” meal kit from Nordic Nomads, which covers your entire week’s meals. The roadbook also provides suggestions for delightful restaurants along the route, so dining out is also an option.
The Nordic Nomads Route
Day 1: Your journey begins in the city of Bergen, where you’ll pick up the vehicle and receive some instructions. Your adventure kicks off with a visit to Hardangerfjord, a place where you’ll immediately immerse yourself in the beauty of Norway and enjoy breathtaking panoramic views.
Day 2: Covering nearly 300 kilometers (186 miles), you’ll embark on a spectacular journey on the second day. Your final destination is the remote village of Kvamme, but along the way, you’ll have the opportunity to stop at Hardangervidda. This is the largest mountain plateau in Northern Europe and also Norway’s largest National Park.
Day 3: Starting from Kvamme, the following day, you’ll drive along the picturesque Route 27 and make several stops along the way. The first stop is at Sohlbergplassen, a beautiful viewpoint overlooking Lake Antsjøen. You’ll also visit the Eltunsfossen waterfall in Øye and the Høre Stave Church, making your way along a 329-kilometer (204-mile) route that day.
Day 4: After three days of driving in the 4×4 Jeep, you’ll have become well-acquainted with the vehicle and be prepared for the mountainous Aursjøvegen road. You’ll drive from Folldal to Langfjorden. This fantastic route features winding roads through a stunning wilderness. Half of the route takes you through the mountains, with several stops planned along the way.
Day 5: From the Langfjorden area, you’ll embark on a beautiful 268-kilometer (166-mile) journey on the fifth day. On this day, you’ll drive along the world-famous Atlanterhavsveien road, a spectacular route along the Atlantic coast that’s been recognized as one of the most picturesque scenic drives in the world. You’ll also take a ferry ride and continue your journey via the Trollstigen mountain road near Geirangerfjord.
Day 6: Starting from Valldal, on the sixth day, you’ll follow Route 60, which offers some of the most breathtaking panoramic views of the fjords. Along this route, you’ll pass by the picturesque Flydalsjuvet, Geiranger, and Geirangerfjorden. Your day will conclude in the town of Sande.
Day 7: After a week of adventure, it’s time to return to civilization. In approximately four hours, you’ll drive a portion of the famous Route 57, passing lakes, waterfalls, steep mountains, valleys, and fjords. Your final destination is the vibrant city of Bergen, where you’ll have the afternoon to explore. The following morning, it’s time to head back to the airport and return your car.
Prices and Dates
You can book the Nordic Nomads road trip through Norway from June to September 2022. The base price starts from $695 per person, based on a jeep for two people and excludes flights. Included in this price are the rental of the jeep, a rooftop tent with a mattress, sleeping bag, bed linens, and pillows, all overnight spots, a roadbook, GPS with the route, and cooking equipment.
