What’s the concept?
This summer, various Iceland Trails will be organized. These trips take place between July and August and go through Iceland’s landscape. A complete week program is planned with hikes ranging from 12 to 15 kilometers (7.5 to 9.3 miles) per day, allowing you to see Iceland’s most beautiful landscapes. The evening before departure, you’ll receive a briefing in Reykjavik. You’ll also receive the ‘trail app’ that contains all the routes and points of interest. In principle, you could venture out on your own with this app, but each trail also includes two or three experienced guides. You’ll sleep in a tent for five nights near a shelter with sanitary facilities and running water. If you don’t have your own tent or don’t want to bring one, you can rent a tent. This is a 3-season tent with a warm sleeping bag and mat. Keep in mind that you won’t come across supermarkets and restaurants along the way, so you’ll need to bring enough food and drink for the entire journey. Quite a challenge, isn’t it?
What does the week roughly look like?
From Reykjavik, you’ll be driven by bus to your first stop. That’s where the real adventure begins! After setting up your tent, it’s time for the very first hike as you walk to Suðurnámur, a mountain peak near Landmannalaugar that offers a fantastic view of the valley. After this hike, you can relax in a hot spring. Over the next four days, you’ll hike along impressive lava flows, climb hundreds of meters in altitude, be rewarded with breathtaking views, cross ice bridges and rivers, witness magnificent glaciers, and pass by waterfalls. The colored mountains give way to dark hills, volcanoes, glaciers, and vast dark lava fields. There’s so much to see that’s truly awe-inspiring.
Every evening, you’ll set up your own tent again – and chances are these will be the most beautiful and unique places you’ve ever camped. Then you’ll return to civilization, but not before visiting one more must-see attraction in Iceland. On the way back, you’ll pass by the Seljalandsfoss waterfall for a visit to Iceland’s most famous and photogenic waterfall. The perfect ending to a wondrous journey through the wilderness! At the end of the day, you’ll take an off-road bus back to Reykjavik, and the next day, you’ll catch your flight back home, unless you decide to spend a few more days in the capital.
The Costs for The Iceland Trail
You can book The Iceland Trail starting from $548, which includes 5 camping nights, internal transportation by 4×4 bus, the trail app, a GPS tracker, and guidance from experienced guides. The flight to and from Reykjavik is not included but can be added for $409. Of course, you can also search for cheaper flight tickets on your own. On the arrival day and the last day in Reykjavik, you can choose to stay at the city campsite for $21 or arrange your own hotel or hostel.
To make things easier for yourself, there are two additional options to book. A so-called Survival Foodpack is very convenient to add. This foodpack includes enough food and drink for the entire week, neither too much nor too little. It also includes a cooking set, so you don’t have to buy one at home. This Survival Foodpack costs $106. Additionally, you can rent camping equipment. This way, you’ll ensure you have everything you need and that it’s warm enough. This costs $73. Of course, it’s also possible to bring your own food, cooking set, and camping equipment. You can find more information about the costs and what’s included and not included on The Iceland Trail website.
