You can also see the opposite waterfall, Tyssvikjo, from here. Be sure to walk across the unique bridge that spans the gorge with 99 steps. The view from the bridge is spectacular! A well-kept secret: The Vøringsfossen Bottom Hike

Much less accessible and therefore much less visited is the hike through the gorge to the base of Vøringsfossen. This short but relatively intense hike goes through the Måbødalen Valley. To reach the starting point of the Vøringsfossen Bottom Hike, drive four kilometers (2.5 mi) from the upper viewpoints to a small parking lot. You’ll see this parking lot on the left, just before the tunnel. Park your car here and walk down the narrow paved road until you see a narrow forest path on your right with a sign saying Vøringsfossen 1.7 km (1.1 mi). This marks the start of the trail to Vøringsfossen.

What is the Vøringsfossen Bottom Hike like?

The trail to Vøringsfossen is very clear and well-marked. Below, we describe the Vøringsfossen Bottom Hike in two parts.

Walking to the Bridge

On the trail, you walk down into the Måbødalen Valley. This is not a difficult path and is manageable for anyone who is reasonably fit. Hiking shoes with good grip are highly recommended. Once you reach the valley floor, you will walk alongside the river, climbing over large rocks. Eventually, you will reach the bridge, from which you already get an amazing view of Vøringsfossen. The bridge has been closed for a few years due to some warped wooden beams, but the steel structure looks solid. We found it to be very sturdy compared to many bridges we’ve encountered in Asia and Latin America. We took the risk and crossed the bridge. This is entirely at your own risk, so inspect the bridge carefully and cross only if it feels safe. Make sure to hold on to the steel for safety and cross one at a time.

Walking from the bridge to Vøringsfossen

After crossing the bridge, the trail becomes a bit more challenging. The path is less clearly visible here as it’s less frequented, but it still guides you. As you get closer to the waterfall, the stones and rocks become slippery, making it easy to slide. It’s important to take your time and carefully find the right path. It might be useful to wear a rain jacket, as the closer you get, the more mist you encounter from the massive waterfall. You will truly feel the power of the water falling down! The closer you get to the waterfall, the more breathtaking the view of Vøringsfossen becomes.

Good to Know: You will return the same way you came, so it requires a bit more effort as you ascend.
