Lake Bohinj is one of the most beautiful lakes in Slovenia and an absolute must-visit if you love nature and tranquility. While Lake Bled can feel a bit more touristy and busy, Lake Bohinj offers a wilder, more relaxed atmosphere. The water is crystal clear, surrounded by the towering peaks of Triglav National Park. Around the lake, you can enjoy countless outdoor activities — from swimming and paddleboarding to hiking and climbing. In this article, we share our best tips for visiting Lake Bohinj!

Things to Do at Lake Bohinj
When visiting Lake Bohinj, you’ll mostly come for the peace and stunning scenery — but there are plenty of fun things to do as well. Here are six great tips!
Take a Refreshing Dip in Lake Bohinj
Lake Bohinj is perfect for a swim on warm summer days. Locals and travelers gather along its shores to relax and cool off in the pristine, clear water. You’ll find small grassy patches and pebble beaches scattered around the lake where you can lay down your towel. There are no beach bars or restaurants here, so be sure to bring your own food and drinks.
Go Paddleboarding or Kayaking on the Lake
One of the best ways to experience Lake Bohinj is from the water. Along the shore, you’ll find several rental stands where you can hire a SUP board or kayak. The lake is usually calm, making it easy even for beginners to stay balanced on their boards. As you paddle, you’ll enjoy incredible reflections of the surrounding mountains mirrored in the water. Early mornings and late afternoons are especially magical times to be out on the lake.
Hike to the Savica Waterfall
On the western side of Lake Bohinj, you’ll find Slap Savica — one of Slovenia’s most famous waterfalls. From the parking lot, it’s about a 20-minute hike up a stair-filled forest trail. The reward? A 78-meter-high (256-foot) cascade plunging into a turquoise pool below. Visit in the morning when the sunlight hits the water for an especially beautiful view.
Grab a Bite at Divja Jaga
For a delicious, casual meal, stop by Divja Jaga. This small wooden street-food stand is run by two young locals and has become a favorite among travelers. They serve tasty sandwiches, bowls, coffee, and kombucha, with vegan, seafood, and meat options available. You can sit at wooden picnic tables with a lovely view of a small church and the mountains behind it.
Ride the Cable Car to Vogel Mountain
For a panoramic view of Lake Bohinj, hop on the cable car to Vogel Mountain. The first lift takes you to the Vogel Ski Center, and from there you can take a chairlift up to Orlove Glave. There’s a restaurant at the top where you can relax with a drink or meal while taking in the spectacular views. In winter, Vogel is a popular ski area, and in summer it’s a great spot for hiking or simply soaking in the mountain scenery. From the summit, you can see the entire lake surrounded by lush green peaks. On clear days, you can even spot Mount Triglav — and sometimes, all the way to the Adriatic Sea!
Tip: The free parking lots near the cable car fill up quickly (around 10 a.m.), so arrive early or choose one of the paid lots within walking distance.

Hike Through Mostnica Gorge and the Voje Valley
If you love hiking, don’t miss the trail through Mostnica Gorge. Starting in the village of Stara Fužina, the path follows the turquoise river and winds past impressive gorges, wooden bridges, and rock formations. Eventually, the landscape opens into the Voje Valley — a peaceful green meadow dotted with mountain huts and surrounded by peaks. The full trail is about 15 kilometers (9.3 miles) long, and along the way you can stop at a cozy mountain hut that serves some of the best homemade apple strudel. It’s the perfect spot for a lunch break with a view!
Visit Lake Bohinj as a Day Trip or Stay Overnight?
Lake Bohinj is easy to visit as a day trip from Bled, since it’s only about 20 kilometers (12.4 miles) away. With a rental car, the drive takes less than 30 minutes. If you don’t have a car, you can take a direct bus from Bled’s main station.
However, if you really want to experience the peace and beauty of Lake Bohinj, we highly recommend spending one or two nights in the area. Around the lake, you’ll find plenty of wonderful accommodations that make for an unforgettable stay. Below are some of our favorite places to stay near Lake Bohinj.
