The cozy center of Bovec is small, with a few lively cafés and restaurants, but the real reason to visit is the nature. The village is surrounded by the towering Julian Alps and serves as the gateway to the famous Soča Valley, where a crystal-blue river winds its way through dramatic landscapes. From rafting and canyoning to ziplining and hiking, Bovec is Slovenia’s ultimate adventure playground. And after a full day of action, there’s nothing better than relaxing on one of the terraces with a view of the mountains and the Soča River. Curious what to do in Bovec? Below we share all our favorite tips!
Things to Do in Bovec
There’s no shortage of amazing things to do in and around Bovec. Here are 8 of our favorites!
Good to know: This article includes several places that aren’t directly in Bovec but are likely along your route from Bled to Bovec. We’ve noted this in each title, but be sure to add them to your navigation before you go—so you don’t miss any of the best stops along the way.
Kayaking on the Soča River
Kayaking on the Soča River is one of the best things to do in Bovec! It’s not just about the sport itself—the surroundings are truly spectacular. As you paddle down the river, you’ll be surrounded by the majestic peaks of the Julian Alps, right in the heart of one of Slovenia’s most beautiful natural areas.
Before hitting the water, you’ll be fully equipped with everything you need: a wetsuit, water shoes, helmet, paddle, and of course, a kayak. The Soča River is known for its cold, clear water and fun current. Some sections are calm and perfect for relaxing and soaking up the scenery, while others are faster and require a bit more steering. Overall, it’s an easy and accessible activity that almost anyone can enjoy, even without prior experience. Don’t forget to bring a set of dry clothes and underwear—you’ll have the chance to change before getting back on the bus. Check availability for kayaking on the Soča River.
Tip: Want even more adrenaline? Go rafting on the Soča River! You’ll tackle rapids, take a refreshing dip, and—if you dare—even try cliff jumping from a 7-meter (23-foot) rock. The enthusiastic guides keep things safe, fun, and full of good vibes.
Hike the Soča Trail
The Soča Trail is one of the most beautiful hikes in Slovenia. This route follows the emerald-green Soča River, taking you through dense forests, mountain meadows, and impressive gorges. Along the way, you’ll pass small waterfalls and farms, cross multiple suspension bridges, and enjoy endless views of the Julian Alps. Our favorite spot was this suspension bridge, which felt extra special in the rugged landscape.
The official start of the trail is in the village of Trenta, near the bus stop Izvir Soče. From there, the route runs linearly for about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) toward Bovec. It’s well-marked with signs labeled “Soška Pot,” the Slovenian name for the Soča Trail. Completing the full trail takes 7–9 hours, depending on your pace and how many breaks you take. Since it’s a point-to-point route, it’s best to take the bus from Bovec to Trenta and start the hike from the official trailhead. That way, you’ll finish right at the Bovec bus station without needing to backtrack. The Nomago bus runs daily and stops at various points along the trail.
Shorten the Soča Trail: Thanks to the Nomago bus connection between Bovec and the Vršič Pass, you can easily shorten the Soča Trail if you don’t want to hike the full 25 kilometers (15.5 miles). The bus stops at several scenic points along the way, such as viewpoints and the Erjavčeva Koča mountain hut. From any of these stops, you can hike a shorter section and catch the bus back to Bovec—creating your perfect custom route without worrying about transport.

Drive the Vršič Pass (on the Route from Bled to Bovec)
About 30 kilometers (18.6 miles) northwest of Bovec lies the Vršič Pass. At an elevation of 1,611 meters (5,285 feet), it’s Slovenia’s highest continuous mountain pass—and an absolute must-see. The road twists through the mountains with 50 hairpin turns, passing rugged peaks, pine forests, and countless scenic viewpoints that will have you stopping for photos every few minutes. It’s a popular route for road trippers and cyclists, so expect to share the road with motorbikes, RVs, and bikers. To avoid the crowds, start as early as possible.
Beyond its spectacular scenery, the Vršič Pass also holds historical significance. The road was built during World War I by Russian prisoners of war. Along the route, you’ll find the Russian Chapel, a small wooden church built in their memory—definitely worth a quick stop.
Good to know: In summer, the Vršič Pass is usually easy to drive, but in winter it can be closed due to snow.
The Longest Zipline in Europe
Harness up and soar 600 meters (1,970 feet) above a 200-meter (656-foot) deep valley—it doesn’t get more thrilling than this! Ziplining in Bovec is a bucket-list experience, home to the longest zipline in Europe. In total, you’ll fly more than 4 kilometers (2.5 miles) across 10 lines, each ranging from 500 to 900 meters (1,640–2,950 feet) long. One of the highlights is the tandem zipline, where you can share the ride with a partner. Traveling solo? The guides will pair you with another participant or join you themselves.
The adventure begins with a jeep ride deep into the mountains on rugged off-road trails. After about a 30-minute drive, you’ll take a short 20-minute hike to the training area, where you’ll get a safety briefing and learn how to brake and handle the wind. After a quick test run, you’ll head to the first zipline. Between lines, there are short scenic walks through the forest. The final line is the most spectacular—nearly 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) long—with breathtaking views of the Julian Alps and the valley below. Check availability for ziplining in Bovec.
Slemenova Špica Hike (on the Route Between Bled and Bovec)
At the cozy mountain hut Erjavčeva Koča, about 35 kilometers (21.7 miles) northwest of Bovec, you’ll find the starting point of the hike to Slemenova Špica. This trail takes you through a variety of landscapes, with ever-changing views along the way. At the summit, a stunning viewpoint rewards you with sweeping mountain panoramas—and on clear days, you can even see the peaks of Austria and Italy. It’s absolutely worth the climb. The hike takes around 1.5 to 2 hours up and about 1.5 hours down. We chose to hike up via the Vršič Trail and descend via the Mala Mojstrovka Trail, creating a loop so you don’t have to take the same route twice.
Tip: Bring plenty of water, as there are no refill points along the trail. Good hiking shoes are essential, and don’t forget warm layers and rain gear—the mountain weather can change quickly.

Canyoning in Bovec
Canyoning in Bovec is known as one of the most adventurous activities in the Soča Valley. You’ll climb through gorges and waterfalls, making your way through a natural water park carved by time. Equipped with a helmet, harness, wetsuit, and sturdy shoes, you’ll set off into the mountains with a small group and experienced guides. After a 25–30 minute uphill hike, the real fun begins: sliding down rocks, rappelling beside waterfalls, and jumping into bright blue pools. In the beginner route, the jumps reach about 5 meters (16 feet), while the “experienced” route includes jumps of up to 10 meters (33 feet). At the start, participants are divided into groups so you can choose which adventure suits you best.
We went for the beginner tour since it was our first canyoning experience—and it was amazing! The first jumps into the cold mountain water are refreshing, but the wetsuit keeps you warm as you move. It feels like stepping into a hidden world of narrow gorges and towering rock walls that you’d never see on a regular hike. The canyoning tour lasts about three hours in total. Check availability for canyoning in Bovec.
Tip: Bring a set of dry clothes and underwear—there’s time to change before heading back on the bus.
Visit the Crystal-Clear Lake in Zelenci Nature Reserve (on the Route Between Bled and Bovec)
Along the route between Bled and Bovec lies a small but magical stop: the Zelenci Nature Reserve. From the parking area, it’s less than a 400-meter (0.25-mile) walk to a stunningly clear turquoise-green lake. The water is so transparent that you can see the fish swimming below. The lake is known for its unique ecosystem and the vibrant green aquatic plants lining its banks.
From the wooden viewing platform, you’ll have an amazing view of the lake and the surrounding landscape. It’s a short, easy walk, making Zelenci Nature Reserve the perfect place for a quick break to stretch your legs, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and admire this special ecosystem. Definitely worth a stop if you’re driving through!

Drive the Mangart Saddle: Slovenia’s Highest Mountain Road
Mangart Saddle is one of Slovenia’s highest paved mountain passes, sitting at 2,055 meters (6,742 feet). The road starts in Log pod Mangartom and winds upward through countless switchbacks and five narrow tunnels to reach the top. Along the entire route, you’ll enjoy spectacular views of the Julian Alps and the deep Log Koritnica Valley. Once at the summit, you can park your car along the road and take photos, go for a short hike, or stop at the mountain hut for a break. The road ends at this point, so you’ll drive back down the same way.
Mangart Saddle is usually open from June to October. Keep in mind that the road is narrow, and in many places, there are no guardrails—so drive slowly and carefully, especially in the curves. Still, it’s perfectly manageable with a regular car; no 4×4 required. The entrance fee for the pass is around €10 (about $11), payable in cash only. From Bovec, it’s roughly a 45-minute drive to Mangart Saddle.
