Ksamil is located in the far south of Albania, just a few kilometers (1.8 miles) from the Greek border. Once a small fishing village, today Ksamil is a lively holiday destination. It’s loved for its crystal-clear bays, sandy beaches, and the beautiful little islands just off the coast. You’ll also find plenty of cozy beach bars, a bustling promenade, and endless opportunities for both adventure and relaxation. In this article, we share our tips for the best beaches, fun things to do, and top restaurants in Ksamil.
Which is better: Ksamil or Sarandë?
The coastal towns of Ksamil and Sarandë are located in southern Albania, just a 30-minute drive apart. They have a lot in common, which can make it tricky to decide where to stay. Still, there are clear differences. Sarandë is a lively city with a wide range of restaurants, bars, and accommodations. You’ll mostly find pebble beaches here. Ksamil, on the other hand, is a smaller village with a cozier vibe and sandy beaches. Both places come alive in high season with beach bars and restaurants. Often beach bars play loud music, and the beaches are packed with sunbeds.
Tip: Prefer peace and quiet? Then Ksamil may not be your best choice. Especially in summer, it gets very busy. In that case, opt for a destination like Himarë or Dhërmi instead.
Things to Do in Ksamil
While most travelers visit Ksamil for its beaches, there’s more to do in and around this seaside town.
Kayak or SUP to the Ksamil Islands
Just off the coast of Ksamil are four small islands, known as the Ksamil Islands. They’re uninhabited, covered in greenery, and surrounded by bright turquoise water. This idyllic bit of nature begs to be explored—and luckily, you can! The islands are easy to reach by kayak or SUP, which you can rent in Ksamil, for example at Ksamil Watersport. Paddle out at your own pace and stop at one of the islands for a picnic, a refreshing swim, or simply to soak up the serene surroundings.
Unwind at a Beach Club in Ksamil
A day at a beach club is a must while in Ksamil. Kick back on a lounger with a drink in hand under the warm sun. At Orange Beach Club Ksamil you can even enjoy a pool with views over the turquoise sea. Settle into a beanbag, order some tasty snacks and drinks, and you’re set for the afternoon! Ohana Beach Bar Ksamil is another great option. It’s located about 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) from the center and is quieter than Orange, making it especially nice for families.
Take a Day Trip to Corfu
Ksamil is just a few kilometers (1.8 miles) from the Greek border, and on clear days you can see Corfu Island from here. From the nearby port of Sarandë, ferries depart daily, taking you to the island in about 30 minutes. A trip to Corfu is perfect if you’re craving a change of scenery. Wander the charming old town of Corfu Town, visit a fortress, enjoy Greek cuisine, or take a dip at one of the island’s beautiful beaches. You can book your ferry ticket online.
Relax at Pulëbardha Beach
A 15-minute drive from Ksamil, Pulëbardha Beach features crystal-clear water, white pebbles, and dramatic rock formations. Like other beaches along the coastal road to Sarandë, the access road is partly unpaved and bumpy.
Step Back in Time at Butrint National Park
Just a few kilometers (1.8 miles) outside Ksamil lies the impressive Butrint National Park. This UNESCO World Heritage site holds the remains of an ancient city once inhabited by Greeks, Romans, Byzantines, and Venetians. Wander through ancient city gates, a beautiful amphitheater, a Venetian castle, and a basilica. Surrounded by water and greenery, this site is as much about nature as it is about history. A must for anyone wanting more than just sun and sand!

Chill at Shpella e Pëllumbave
This is our favorite beach along the road between Sarandë and Ksamil. Small and tucked against a huge cliff, it has a cozy beach bar and a relaxed vibe. From the parking lot at the top of the hill, it’s less than a 15-minute walk down a dirt path, with the final stretch via a steep staircase that leads through the beach bar to the sea.
Swim in the Calm Waters of Mirror Beach
Mirror Beach, known locally as Plazhi i Pasqyrave, is one of the most popular beaches near Ksamil, famous for its glassy water that reflects like a mirror in the sun. It’s right next to Shpella e Pëllumbave, though you’ll need to take a small detour to reach it. At the edges of Mirror Beach you’ll find rocky sections of coastline that are great for climbing or snorkeling.
Spread Out Your Towel at Edon-Bina Beach
Right next to Mirror Beach, Edon-Bina Beach is perfect if you’d rather skip the beach clubs and enjoy some peace. There are no loungers, umbrellas, or restaurants here. It’s a private beach, so expect to pay a small entrance fee.
Take a Day Trip to Sarandë
Sarandë is the largest town in the area. This lively seaside destination blends beach, culture, and nightlife. Stroll along the vibrant Hasan Tahsini Boulevard, watch the sunset from Lekuresi Castle, visit a centuries-old monastery, or spend the day at one of its many beach clubs. Curious about the best restaurants, beach bars, and sights? Check out our detailed guide with tips for Sarandë.
How to get from Ksamil to Sarandë? By car it’s about 30 minutes, but you can also take the local bus. In summer it runs roughly every 30 minutes, and every hour in the off-season. The bus stops at several points along Ksamil’s main road, so there’s always a stop nearby.
Take a Trip to the Blue Eye (Syri i Kaltër)
The Blue Eye, or Syri i Kaltër, is a natural spring about an hour’s drive from Ksamil. It’s famous for its deep, vibrant blue color. Note: this is not the same Blue Eye as the one near Theth in northern Albania.
The view is stunning: nestled in lush greenery, crystal-clear water bubbles up with incredible force from the depths. The spring resembles a giant eye, with a dark center and turquoise edges. To protect this fragile spot, swimming is not allowed. You can follow a short trail to a viewing platform for the best perspective.
Tip: In summer it gets crowded here. Arrive as early as possible for the best experience!
Monastery Beach
Monastery Beach (Plazhi i Manastirit) is a quiet, secluded pebble beach. Reached by a narrow, steep concrete road, it rewards you with calm waters and a historic monastery just a short walk away.
Join the Crowds at Ksamil Beach
Ksamil’s main beach isn’t necessarily our favorite, but it’s worth mentioning. With bright blue water, white sand, and views of the Ksamil Islands, it’s undeniably stunning. However, it’s also extremely crowded and packed with loungers and umbrellas. If you’re looking for peace and space, you’ll be better off at another beach.
Good to know: Visiting beaches in Ksamil works a bit differently. Most small beaches are tied to a beach bar or club, so you usually can’t just lay out your towel. Almost everywhere you’ll be asked to rent a lounger and umbrella. Each spot has its own vibe—some play loud music and cater to younger crowds, while others are quieter and more family-friendly. Don’t settle for the first spot—walk around and find the one that suits you best.
